Crib shopping was an adventure for us, but we finally made a decision.  Which crib did we choose?

Suggestion-get one where the side goes up and down. If you have a C-Section or any other surgery while your child is still using a crib, you’ll really strain yourself having to reach over and down into the bed. Having the kind where you can lower the side makes this easier on you.

I personally wasn’t happy with the cribs with the drop down sides. The mechanics are sometimes tricky to operate (some brands require two hands to maneuver!) and very often made of cheap plastic parts that have a tendency to break often, which is why all of the cribs you see above are the stationary convertible cribs. One side is lower than the other, and the mattress can be adjusted to either three or four levels, as the baby grows.

I’m going with A, all because of the FEET!

L, I second you on the drop down side cribs. You can always use a stool to step up higher if needed. We’ve had two and they were great.

That said, the second one (Kate’s) was C. It sucked, only because it was made from pine. The wood is so soft it gets destroyed very, very, very easily. It’s not something to grow with your kid simply because the wood is so soft. Paul had to drill some extra holes and do a little wood working to get it all together and sturdy. Once that was done, it was fine… although we only changed the height once due to concern over messing with it. (Not necessarily because we were worried about it’s safety, but because of the hassle.) Will’s was made of Cherry from Baby Italia and was pretty much a joy comparatively. It cost a bunch more, but after 2 1/2 years as a crib, three moves, and multiple assembly and re-assembly, it turned into a beautiful double bed and has stayed that way for two years without a scratch.

I’m guessing B - I know it isn’t D - unless it also comes in cherry! We do have the drop down side and I loved it initially (sore from c-section) but really, we don’t use it much anymore. Although, we have decided to start doing a diaper change when we go to bed since Robbie’s decided to have a full cup of h2o before bed each night and then ends up wetting through if he doesn’t, and it has proved useful. In the end, as long as it holds up, does it really matter as long as the baby is safe and comfortable?

We chose B, the Davinci/Million Dollar Baby Emily Crib. It was one of the highest rated (and affordable, $270) stationary cribs available. A is the Babi Italia Lifestyle Crib (available only at Babies-R-Us). While it receives fabulous reviews, it also runs $400. C is the Davinci/Million Dollar Baby Kalani Crib, another affordable option available at around $350 or so. Lastly, D is a Simplicity Crib, a company that gets poor crib ratings, due to construction flaws and past recalls, so we really didn’t even consider this crib, I just threw it in the mix. I will post an article on crib shopping that goes into more detail.
